9 Common Drugs – And Their Dental and Oral Health Issues

Important: Inform your dentist if you currently taking are or have taken any of the following drugs! The below suggestions are being provided for general informational purposes only and should not be considered medical advice or consultation. Always check with your personal physician when you have a question pertaining to your health.


FOXAMAX (or other bisphosphonate derivatives)

KNOWN TO CAUSE: Osteonecrosis of the Jaw

What this means to you: Osteonecrosis is when the bone becomes too hard and the tissue cannot heal properly over the bone after surgery, trauma or extractions. It leaves the bone completely exposed. What you should do: Completely avoid any surgical work in the mouth to help avoid Osteonecrosis. Tell your dentist you are taking this drug and schedule regular check-ups and cleanings of every 3-4 months.


HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE

KNOWN TO CAUSE: Orthostatic Hypotension and Hypotension.

What this means to you: Decrease in blood pressure. This can cause fainting or passing out in the dental chair and should be closely monitored
What you should do: Inform your dentist that you are taking this drug and request that you are monitored carefully.



ALBUTEROL

KNOWN TO CAUSE: Dry Mouth (xerostomia)

What this means to you: Saliva has multiple jobs in the mouth. It aides in digestion, washes the teeth, helps in re-mineralization of the teeth, aides in chewing and swallowing. A decrease in saliva causes an increase in cavities, especially in root cavities which are harder to treat and can cause bigger problems than normal cavities.
What you should do: Increase your regular check-ups and cleanings to once every 3-4 months and consider using a home fluoride gel or rinse.


PRILOSEC

KNOWN TO CAUSE: Taste Perversion, Dry Mouth (xerostomia), Esophageal Candidiasis, and Mucosal Atrophy of the Tongue.

What this means to you: Taste Perversion is the alteration of the way food tastes to you. That means much of the food you eat simply won’t taste good anymore. What you should do: There is not much you can do for this other than to try and find those foods which are more tolerable.

What this means to you: Dry Mouth is the decrease of saliva. Saliva has multiple jobs in the mouth. It aides in digestion, washes the teeth, helps in re-mineralization of the teeth and aides in chewing and swallowing. A decrease in saliva causes an increase in cavities, especially in root cavities which are harder to treat and can cause bigger problems than normal cavities. What you should do: Increase water intake and decrease sweets. Increase your regular check-ups and cleanings to once every 3-4 months and consider using a home fluoride gel or rinse.

What this means to you: Esophageal Candidiasis is an infection and is like having jock itch or a yeast infection in your throat with pain, itching and burning sensations. What you should do: Medication will be necessary to treat the infection.


CLARITIN

KNOWN TO CAUSE: Dry Mouth (xerostomia)

What this means to you: Saliva has multiple jobs in the mouth. It aides in digestion, washes the teeth, helps in re-mineralization of the teeth, aides in chewing and swallowing. A decrease in saliva causes an increase in cavities, especially in root cavities which are harder to treat and can cause bigger problems than normal cavities. CELEBREX

KNOWN TO CAUSE: Stomatitis (inflammation of the tissue of the oral cavity), taste perversion, dry mouth (xerostomia,) and decreased platelet aggregation.

What this means to you: Stomatitis can make your oral tissues look sunburned. It is usually accompanied with a light burning sensation, or other slight discomfort. What you should do: See your doctor.

PROZAC

KNOWN TO CAUSE: Dry Mouth (xerostomia,) Taste Perversion and Grinding of Teeth (bruxism.)

What this means to you: Dry Mouth is the decrease of saliva. Saliva has multiple jobs in the mouth. It aides in digestion, washes the teeth, helps in re-mineralization of the teeth and aides in chewing and swallowing. A decrease in saliva causes an increase in cavities, especially in root cavities which are harder to treat and can cause bigger problems than normal cavities.
